I don’t venture up to Midtown to eat very often — generally I prefer to avoid the concrete jungle, tourists, and mediocre restaurants. But La Silhouette was recommended to me by some food-loving friends, so I added it to the wish list. My first impression was positive — a welcoming bar greets you upon entering. You then follow a hallway of a few tables and enter the dining area. The decor is simple; almost too simple. Dark tables, white walls, a few flower pots on the window sills. The interior did not detract from the food, but definitely did not add to the ambiance.
We shared some appetizers, mains and desserts. Overall I was pleased with the food, and would go back for a business dinner in Midtown West but wouldn’t choose it over downtown restaurant options (yes, I am snooty). The food is detailed below, but the standout courses for me were the fluke tartare, poached farm egg, and the duck.
Amuse Bouche
Poached Farm Egg – “Truffled” mascarpone polenta, oyster mushrooms, porcini coulis
Not my favorite rendition of this popular dish, but love the savoriness of all the ingredients and especially the texture of oyster mushrooms and woodsy flavor of the porcini coulis
Pâté de Campagne – Country Terrine, Foie Gras, Pistachios, Sour Cherries
Decent terrine, but if you want excellent, go to Bar Bouloud not too far away
Long Island Fluke Tartare – American caviar, citrus vinaigrette, poppy seed flatbread
Awesome dish — delicious fluke, loved the citrus vinaigrette
Butter Poached Lobster and Bass – Celery Root-Apple “slaw” & Leek Fondue, Sauce Américaine
I’ve had better lobster, but it’s tough to mess up lobster + butter combo
Long Island Duck Breast – Figs, Baby Turnips, Citrus-Spiced Organic Red Rice, Orange-Ginger Coulis
Loved the dish, although since then I’ve had duck at Dell’Anima and that one rocked my world
Lamb Chop and Lamb Shank Crépinette – Brocolli Rabe, Sweet Potatoes, Fennel-Lamb Sausage, Rosemary Jus
Very reminiscent of the Agnello dish at Ai Fiori; loved the combination of the lamb and rosemary
Desserts
Warm Chocolate Cake – Concord Grape Gel, Peanut Butter Powder, Vanilla Ice Cream
Popcorn “Crème Brûlée” – Candied Honey Crisp Apples, Caramel Popcorn, Salty Caramel Ice Cream
Roasted Pear Tarte Tatin – Candied Ginger, Cranberries, Lemon Ice Cream
I stumbled across this restaurant last week. Like you, I thought it was good. But also like you, I would not choose it over my favorite spots in say Korea Town.
I agree – tough to mess up lobster. But I accidentally put too much soy sauce on mine. Whoops. Speaking of soy sauce, if you go to Kun Jip in Korea Town off 32nd Street, they have spectacular dumplings and soy sauce. SOOOO good. -_-
I love your reviews btw! Keep on posting!
