ABC Kitchen opened in March 2010 from a collective vision by chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, restauranteur Phil Suarez and ABC Home CEO & Creative Director Paulette Cole. According to Jean-Georges, the elegant farm-to-table restaurant was to marry “artful design with exquisite, locally sourced food” in a fresh and unique way. A little over a year later, ABC Kitchen was named the Best New Restaurant of 2011 by the James Beard Foundation and has continued to garner praise from critics and patrons alike.
“Passionately committed to offering the freshest organic and local ingredients possible” is the mantra ABC Kitchen upholds, and the restaurant even uses the entire back of the menu to detail how exactly it accomplishes this. From the food to the decor, everything about the restaurant is sustainable, local, and organic. Chef Daniel Kluger strives to maintain a seasonally changing menu that is 85% locally sourced (specifically within 90 miles of the restaurant between May and October). The ingredients are “consciously sourced” from organic small farms, humanely treated livestock, produce free of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers, and organic wines, teas, coffees, and spices that are cultivated on fair trade cooperatives. There is even a rooftop garden that provides herbs and micro-greens.
The ABC Home creative team designed the restaurant to utilize as much reclaimed and recycled materials as possible. The beautiful craftsmanship of local artists is predominately featured, including the handmade porcelain dinnerware by Jan Burtz and salvaged, live edge wood tables by Jim Denney. Photographs by Elena Iyakir adorn the walls and vintage light fixtures seem to float in this light and airy space.
All the dinnerware, as well as light fixtures, bar stools, and anything for the home, can be found within the 10 floors of the adjacent abc carpet and home, which the restaurant is connected to via a back entrance. Very effective cross-marketing!
I recently went to ABC Kitchen with a group of 5 and had a splendid brunch. The entrance is very unassuming, but inside it certainly is a wonder to behold. Everyone felt right at home in the charming dining room and we were very eager to check out the dinnerware in the store after brunch. The food was superb – classic, comfort food where you can absolutely taste the freshness of the ingredients! I would most definitely return for brunch and would love to check out the dinner menu someday as well.
These juices were so fresh, so pure, so rich, and sooooo good. I have been on a juice kick lately and right now ABC Kitchen and Rouge Tomate have my favorite juice bars!
The Local: apple, carrot, beet, lemon, ginger and local bee pollen
Green: Chard, Kale, Celery, Jalapeño, Cilantro, Spinach (there’s a lot more green stuff but I forgot)
Seasonal Glazed Donuts
I am not a doughnut person at all but these were so fluffy and airy… it was like having a candy cloud melt in your mouth!
Maple Bacon Biscuits
This was the brunch star item for me! It was smokey and savory but subtle in its sweetness. Not too heavy but definitely delicious.
Eggs Benedict with flying pigs farm ham
Nice classic done well
French Toast with Apples
This is a very popular brunch item here; perfect sweetness!
Grilled Portabello Sandwich, Arugula and Parmesan, Lemon Mayo, Jalapeño with Rosemary Fries
Very juicy and savory sandwich complemented by perfectly crispy rosemary fries served with a vibrant tomato-based sauce
WHOLE WHEAT PIZZAS
Mushrooms, Parmesan, Oregano, and Farm Egg Pizza
Hearty and rich and packed with tons of different mushrooms
